WWE WrestleMania 39 Night 1 Post-Show Media Scrum: Main Event Decision, Bad Bunny, Sami Zayn, Rey Mysterio

Following Saturday’s WWE WrestleMania 39 Night 1 event in Inglewood, California, WWE CCO Paul “Triple H” Levesque held a post-show press conference.

Some of the topics included Levesque’s thoughts on the decision for the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship match to main event Night 1 of WrestleMania 39. Levesque stated that he felt that it was the most emotional and storyline driven match on the card and was deserving to close out the show.

On the topic of the rumors of WWE’s plans for the SmackDown Women’s Championship match to close out the show, Levesque claimed that was just outside noise having to do with trying to put women in positions on shows just for the sake of doing it. Levesque stated that has never been a thing he has held as a view for wrestling and instead views talent as just talent and nothing more.

On the topic of celebrities making appearances and taking up spots on WrestleMania, Levesque stated that it just means that WWE’s talents are going to have to step up. Levesque also stated that if Bad Bunny wants to wrestle in a match at their upcoming Backlash 2023 event in Puerto Rico, he will reach out about it and they will make it happen.

During his portion of the press conference, Sami Zayn gave his thoughts on his feeling that the Bloodline storyline in WWE is what The Sopranos was to television in terms of impact. Zayn stated:

There are hall of famers, world champions multiple times over, I’m talking some of the best ever that have never got to tell a story like this, over this course of time, with this level of depth, with this many talented individuals in front and in back of the camera, especially on the performance side of it. I feel so lucky to have been a part of it. This feels like the culmination of it, but it’s a long timeline with WWE, so even if you think you’ve put a nice bow on it, we can unravel that at any time and call back to it. That’s been the beauty of this story, the number of callbacks. So much of it would not have worked with any other individuals. It had to be the Usos and Roman because that is a legitimate, lifelong relationship. It had to be Kevin because that is a legitimate 20-year friendship. Without that level of reality bleeding into the story, it just wouldn’t work. One of the things that I take a lot of pride in with this story over the past year is…I do think it transcended the classical wrestling storyline. It’s a glimpse into, because of its effectiveness, it could be a glimpse of what storylines going forward, if not achieve, will at least aspire to, in my opinion. Much like you saw with television, how it kind of evolved with the golden age of television in the 2000s with HBO and things like that, and more complex and layered characters. To do this story, if I may be so bold to offer a comparison, it’s almost like the Sopranos. It is, to WWE, what the Sopranos was to television. If I may be so bold to make that comparison.”

During his portion of the press conference, Rey Mysterio gave his thoughts on the special The Great Muta style mask he wore for his match against his son Dominik Mysterio at the event. Mysterio stated:

Six years ago, this mask has been in the projects. The creator of this mask is the creator of Hollywood, the Marvel Universe. That’s how deep it went. WrestleMania goes Hollywood, it was the perfect time. We didn’t go superhero, we went Hollywood style this year. I was very happy with the outcome. On top of that, we had a mixture of the mask being made by a good friend of ours, Darnell, who works for the Marvel Universe, and (Masahiro) Hayashi, my creator since 1996, who made the tights, the vest, and everything else. I’m very happy with the outcome of the outfit tonight. I hope the fans loved it as much as I did.”
