As noted before, WWE recently announced the debut of a new World Heavyweight Championship in the company and its inaugural champion to be crowned at this month’s Night of Champions event in Saudi Arabia.
During WWE’s press conference earlier today in San Juan, Puerto Rico to promote Saturday’s Backlash 2023 event in the city, WWE CCO Paul “Triple H” Levesque announced that the tournament to crown the inaugural World Heavyweight Champion will take place starting next week.
Levesque stated that tournament matches will be taking place on both the May 8th RAW show in Jacksonville, Florida and the May 12th SmackDown show in Knoxville, Tennessee. Levesque also stated that the winners from each night will compete in the finals of the tournament at WWE’s Night of Champions 2023 event on May 27th in Saudi Arabia.
“A few weeks ago, I introduced the world to the new World Heavyweight Championship. Since then, with Roman Reigns and the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship being drafted to SmackDown, this world championship will now be the property of Monday Night Raw. But starting after Backlash, this Monday night on Raw, we will begin a world heavyweight championship tournament. It will be across both brands. On Monday Night Raw, there will be two triple threat matches, with the winners facing each other later that night to determine a winner for Monday Night Raw. That Friday on SmackDown, the same thing will happen. Two Triple Threat matches will take place. Those winners will face each other at the end of SmackDown to determine a winner there. Those two winners from Raw and SmackDown will then go on to Night of Champions, where one of them will be crowned the new World Heavyweight Champion.”
