Longtime AEW Vice President of Live Events & Touring Rafael Morffi reportedly will be leaving the company at the end of 2023, according to PWInsider.
Mike Johnson reported that his sources stated that Morffi is currently set to leave AEW following their Worlds End event on December 30th. Morffi reportedly had informed AEW officials of his intent to leave the company during their recent shows in Montreal, Canada earlier this month.
Johnson reported that the reason for Morffi’s departure is due to him recently accepting a new senior executive job with the Barclays Center in New York City, which is where Morffi and his family currently resides. One main reason for Morffi’s decision reportedly was due to him wanting to remain closer to his family and not be on the road constantly as was needed for his AEW job.
Johnson reported that those spoken to stated that the offer Morffi received from the Barclays Center was described to be “such an amazing offer” that there was no way he could pass up on the opportunity.
Those spoken to within AEW reportedly stated that Morffi was well liked and respected and is someone who will be missed within the company.
Prior to joining AEW, Morffi previously worked in TNA Wrestling, House of Hardcore, and WWE as well as the New York Cosmos soccer team and New York Mets.
During his time in AEW, Morffi reportedly was a key person who helped set the stage for AEW to run their Grand Slam events at the Arthur Ashe Stadium due to his sports connections. Morffi reportedly was also a key person involved in all aspects of AEW’s marketing for the All In event at Wembley Stadium.
