Update on AEW’s Plans for Young Bucks vs. Sting & Darby Allin for Sting’s Retirement Match

As noted before, this past Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite Homecoming 2024 show featured the Young Bucks making their surprise return to AEW and being teased to be Sting’s final opponent for his retirement match at AEW’s Revolution 2024 event. This match was something AEW officials had in place for plans several weeks ago and something that Sting was onboard with doing due to him having a major say on who gets to be his final opponent.

Dave Meltzer reported in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter that his sources provided some new details regarding AEW’s plans for the Young Bucks as Sting’s final opponent.

Meltzer reported that AEW CEO Tony Khan had offered Sting anyone from AEW’s roster and pretty much anyone on most others rosters that he could have access to with the exception of WWE for Sting’s choice for his retirement match opponent.

Khan reportedly asked Sting who he wanted to face and Sting responded back stating the Young Bucks as his choice. The reason for Sting’s decision reportedly is due to he had loved working with the Young Bucks in their Trios match at AEW and NJPW’s Forbidden Door I event in 2022, which featured Sting, Darby Allin, & Shingo Takagi vs. El Phantasmo & The Young Bucks.

In regards to the Young Bucks, Meltzer reported that the Young Bucks had originally planned to take more time off for their break before returning but after Sting asked for them as his choice, they were not going to turn down his request and cut their break short.
