Sami Zayn, Dominik Mysterio, Chad Gable Teased for Gunther’s Opponent for WrestleMania 40

Monday’s RAW show featured several teases for Gunther’s potential opponent for his WWE Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania 40, which takes place on April 6-7 at the Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

This new potential match teased is an Intercontinental Championship match of Sami Zayn or Dominik Mysterio or Chad Gable vs. Gunther (c).

This match was initially teased in recent weeks over Zayn stating that he does not exactly know what his path is for WrestleMania 40 but has to trust the feeling in his gut. Zayn also had stated that there is a path for him to do something historic at WrestleMania and claimed that it involves winning a championship to cement his status in WWE.

During tonight’s show, RAW backstage interviewer Jackie Redmond asked for some words from Zayn following his win over Shinsuke Nakamura on the show. Zayn responded stating that the win was huge for him since a loss would have been devastating. Zayn stated that he will be a champion but does not know how he is getting to WrestleMania. Zayn also stated that he knows the path and will find “him.” This led to each member of Imperium walking by and staring down Zayn ending with Gunther laughing at Zayn before walking away.

In a follow-up segment, Imperium made their way to the ring and Gunther gave a promo talking about his victory over Jey Uso last week and praised Jey for coming close to dethroning him. Gunther then proceeded to mock everyone he has beaten and people requesting him to face opponents such as The Miz and R-Truth for his Intercontinental title at WrestleMania 40.

Judgement Day came out to interrupt leading to Damian Priest praising Gunther on his dominate title reign but claimed that it was only second compared to their dominance as WWE Tag Team champions. Priest then stated that Judgement Day has plans for more gold with Gunther’s title in their sight. Gunther responded that if Priest was not going to cash in on him, then who will it be and mentioned Finn Balor and “the one with the big head” in reference to JD McDonagh. Dominik Mysterio then stepped forward and stated that the IC title belongs to them. This led to Gunther shoving Mysterio in response and Priest trying to lunge at Gunther only to be held back by Balor and McDonagh. After some heated words by Priest, Judgement Day left the ring.

In another follow-up segment, Chad Gable was seen backstsge in RAW General Manager Adam Pearce’s office. Gable gave his case on why he should be the one who faces Gunther for the IC title at WrestleMania 40. Gable stated that while for others just winning the title off of Gunther would mean the most for them, him winning would be a lot more personnel. Gable stated that Gunther had made his child cry after he was unable to defeat Gunther for the title the last time they faced off.

Two Matches Announced for Next Week’s RAW Show

Monday’s RAW show also featured two new matches officially announced for the card of next week’s WWE RAW show on March 4th in San Antonio, Texas.

The first new match announced was a singles match of Becky Lynch vs. Nia Jax.

This match was setup following Jax and Lynch attacking each other during tonight’s show rekindling their recent rivalry. Jax had attacked Lynch following Lynch’s promo segment with Rhea Ripley and Dominik Mysterio while Lynch returned the favor during Jax’s match against Liv Morgan. In a follow-up backstage segment, Lynch was seen talking to RAW GM Adam Pearce demanding for a match with Jax stating that she will not be able to let go of her issues with Jax and focus on her match against Ripley at WrestleMania 40 until after she settles things with Jax. Pearce agreed to give her the match for next week’s show.

The second new match announced was a singles match of Drew McIntyre vs. Jey Uso.

This match was setup following a backstage brawl involving McIntyre and Uso. RAW backstage interviewer Jackie Redmond asked Uso for his thoughts about falling short of defeating Gunther last week for his Intercontinental Championship. Uso stated that he has been falling short of his mission and it could be his past enemies or even his own family members keeping him from achieving it. McIntyre then walked in to interrupt and stated that he knows Jey is having a tough time and wants Jey to know that he deserves what is happening to him. This led to Uso punching McIntyre in response and a brawl breaking out that was quickly broken up by WWE officials.

Current card for March 4th RAW show:

  • Jey Uso vs. Drew McIntyre
  • Becky Lynch vs. Nia Jax
