Tony Khan Comments on Turning Down Darby Allin’s Pitch to Get Hit By A Car During AEW’s Pandemic Era Tapings

A recent episode of the Way of the Blade podcast featured AEW CEO Tony Khan. One of the topics discussed included Khan’s thoughts about him turning down a pitch by Darby Allin to get hit by a car during AEW’s pandemic era tapings and his reason for his decision.

“Darby in the pandemic, early in the pandemic when we had a very light crew. The April 2020 shows that we filmed in QT [Marshall] and Cody [Rhodes’] gym in Georgia, they had just under 30% of the roster there. Darby wanted to get hit by a car in his program with Sammy [Guevara]. I said, ‘That’s not something we can do right now because we really need you. Not only can I afford for you to not get hurt, I can’t even write you off for a week to sell. You need to wrestle on the show every week, so I can’t do that. We don’t have anybody else and you’re a major part of what we’re doing week to week.’ I think that would have not made sense when you have a handful of people there and there are very few of the name wrestlers and he wants to get hit by a car. Not only can we afford for him to not be injured, we really can’t afford for him to be off TV for a week.”

In a recent interview with the Battleground Podcast, Adam Cole gave his thoughts about if he has any interesting in adding potential new members to his Paragon stable. Cole stated “It’s tough to say. You know, I think, I think right now, as far as our vision for what Paragon is. Obviously, me, Kyle, and Roddy have such a long, storied history together, both as friends and as enemies, sometimes as well. But there are no two people that I trust more, not just in pro wrestling, but in my life, than Kyle and Roddy. So at the moment, it feels like it’s just going to be the three of us. But again, you never know. Just thinking about when the Undisputed ERA started, for example, it was me, Kyle O’Reilly, and Bobby Fish, and we had the same vision where we’re like, ‘We’re not going to let anyone in the group, no one else. It’s just the three of us.’ The next thing you know, Roderick Strong comes along, and then it felt like the group really started. So, I don’t know, I guess it kind of depends, but right now, I’m very, very happy being alongside Rodrick and Kyle at the moment, so we’ll see.” (Transcript h/t: Fightful.com)

In the same interview, Adam Cole also gave his thoughts about Will Ospreay and Kevin Knight being his choices as dream opponents to defend his TNT Championship against in AEW. Cole stated “Oh man, again, the tagline of, ‘Where the best wrestle, when you look at our roster. I mean, it really is stacked with the best wrestlers in the world. There are so many guys that I would love to face that I haven’t had the chance to within AEW. Will Ospreay is a guy I’d love to step into the ring with. Kevin Knight is absolutely incredible. He’s done an unreal job. I’d love to step into the ring with him. For the longest time, Daniel Garcia was someone I wanted to fight, and then we had a trilogy of matches, which was fun. So, man, there is just there are so many guys on our roster that I would love to step into the ring with. Part of the reason that the open challenge happened is to get the chance to face off, and step into the ring with some of these guys who I hopefully will get the chance to do so, because I gotta solidify myself as the best TNT Champion of all time, and part of that will be these matches that I have and the challenges that I face. So, man, I could go on and on through our whole roster, but quite a few guys I’d love to step into the ring with.” (Transcript h/t: Fightful.com)
