Former WCW wrestler and Pro Football Hall of Famer Steve “Mongo” McMichael passed away on Wednesday at the age of 67.
McMichael’s passing was first announced by the NFL and other sports news outlets.
McMichael’s pro football career spanned from 1980 to 1994 and was most known for his time with the Chicago Bears from 1981 to 1993.
Following his retirement from football, McMichael pursued a wrestling career that spanned from 1995 to 1999 and was most known for his time in WCW.
During his time in WCW, McMichael was most known for being a member of the legendary Four Horsemen stable. McMichael also worked as a color commentator alongside Eric Bischoff and Bobby Heenan from 1995 to 1996 and would bring his pet dog Pepe with him at the commentary booth for shows.
McMichael also made an appearance for TNA Wrestling at their Bound For Glory 2008 event. McMichael was the special guest referee for the Monster’s Ball match between Beer Money, Inc. (James Storm & Robert Roode), Abyss & Matt Morgan, The Latin American Xchange (Hernandez & Homicide), and Team 3D (Brother Devon & Brother Ray).
McMichael’s wrestling career achievements and accolades included being a one-time WCW United States Heavyweight Champion. Outside of wrestling, McMichael’s pro football career achievements and accolades included being a one-time NFL Superbowl champion (XX) and inductions into the College Football Hall of Fame (2009), Gridiron Greats Hall of Fame (2019), and Pro Football Hall of Fame (2024)
