As noted before, this past Monday’s WWE RAW show in Phoenix, Arizona featured Gunther defeating Jey Uso to become the new WWE World Heavyweight Champion.
Dave Meltzer reported in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter that his sources confirmed that the reason for the World Heavyweight title change at this past Monday’s WWE RAW show was due to Goldberg’s upcoming return to WWE.
Those spoken to reportedly stated that WWE CCO Paul “Triple H” Levesque made the call for Gunther to win the title and for him to be Goldberg’s retirement opponent at the July 12th WWE Saturday Night’s Main event show in Atlanta, Georgia.
Meltzer reported that Levesque and WWE officials had always planned for Gunther vs. Goldberg to be the retirement match for Goldberg and for this match to go up against AEW’s All In Texas event that same night. Meltzer also reported that the idea by WWE officials was to maximize that day by having a big match on free network television instead of saving it for Netflix.
Meltzer speculated that Goldberg would have to lose his retirement match because if he won similar to Sting with the AEW World Tag Team titles for his final match, it would ruin WWE’s current long-term plans for John Cena’s “last real champion” storyline angle as Undisputed WWE Champion.
