As noted before, Pro Wrestling Guerilla has been on a hiatus since November of 2023 due family-related health issues involving PWG co-owner Super Dragon’s girlfriend’s battle with cancer.
A recent episode of the What Happened When with Tony Schivanoe podcast featured PWG co-owner and AEW commentator Excalibur as the guest. One of the topics discussed included Excalibur’s thoughts about the evolution of PWG’s business model and the potential of the company making a return in the future.
“It was razor-thin margins the entire way. That’s the best way to describe you. The fact that it became known as a place where, if you wanted to Zack Sabre Jr wrestle his first significant match in the US, you either had to buy a ticket or buy a DVD. Right up until the very end, did not want to do streaming or live distribution. The business model was the same. A lot of that was Super Dragon’s stubbornness. Stubbornness, genius, whatever you want to call it. It was that way until the end. I don’t want to say the end because nothing has been made official. PWG has been on hiatus for a couple of years, but there is always a chance it could come back. Never say never. The business model didn’t evolve all that much. That’s why we were so desperate to sell every one of those 500 seats in Legion Hall.”
Excalibur also gave his thoughts about celebrities who attended PWG events and his claim to fame for his PWG and wrestling career involving actress Sofia Vergara attending a PWG show in 2015.
“The most surprising was Sofia Vergara. That is the first name that comes to mind for a lot of people in terms of celebrities at PWG. She was there because another person I got to meet and become friendly with is Chris Bauer. He was on ‘True Blood,’ and for their cast wrap party, he bought 10 or 12 tickets. The cast of ‘True Blood’ came along with Chris, and Sofia Vergara was married to Joe Manganiello at the time. He was on True Blood and that’s how she was there. There is a photo she posted on Instagram where she’s looking pretty and is next to the ring and it reads, “I think they’re dead.’ My claim to fame is that it is my exposed butt crack that is right behind her.”
