Wrestling Intel’s Alex McCarthy reported that his sources stated that AEW recently parted ways with Nik Sobic, Senior Vice President of Business Development, Partnerships, and Video Games.
McCarthy reported that Sobic had been with AEW since its founding in 2019 and was in charge of overseeing operations, live events, and the development of the AEW Fight Forever video game.
AEW’s Fight Forever video game was released 2023 and received mixed reviews from critics and mixed to negative reception from consumers.
McCarthy reported that it is currently not known if Sobic’s departure from AEW is related to the Fight Forever video game. In a statement to McCarthy, AEW stated that they do not comment on personnel decisions.
Sobic had stated in an interview with the AEW Unrestricted podcast in 2023 that he was one of the people who pushed for the inclusion of mini-games for Fight Forever.
“Not all development meetings are fun, but one of the best and most fun times was the brainstorming meeting for mini-games. We came up with 100 ideas.
I pushed so hard for Shida’s slugfest. It made me happy that Adam Cole liked it too. That one was a little controversial, but it’s my favorite. I’m not capable of being unbiased on that.
Why mini-games? This game is optimized for couch play. It’s awesome online and has unlimited online features, but I will tell you that the people that worked on this game are gaming nerds that have been playing games their whole lives and miss the couch play experience. Mini-games sort of scratch that itch.”
Prior to his work with AEW, Sobic also worked with Tony Khan as a Director with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
