Swerve Strickland Comments on Violent Matches Needs “To Be Justified, Not Just For The Sake Of It”
Simon Miller held a recent interview with Swerve Strickland. One of the topics discussed included Strickland’s thoughts about his rivalry with Hangman Adam Page in AEW and how the story warranted the violent matches they had instead of being done just for the sake of it.
“I would say the means and the hatred between two characters, for the violence to go that far, has to be justified. I felt like me and Hangman was very justified seeing as we pushed boundaries with each other as men, not just characters, but as men.
I went into his home, he burnt down my house. That kind of warrants being dropped on a cinder block. That warrants the syringe and all the violence. That’s the connection we’ve had and once again all the equity we put in that year to get that far, to push things that far.
I feel like it just has to justify the means, the motive, why I’m doing this. Callbacks to certain things. Like the staple gun, stapling the picture of a kid’s painting that I ripped off his refrigerator when I went to his home. It was a callback to those things. Then I stapled my family picture that was in the photos that I had for the house back on his face.
So it was callbacks for reasonings and stuff like that. It’s all about having a justification for the violence between two characters and not just doing it for the sake of doing it to try to top it.”

Last Sunday’s AEW Revolution 2026 event in Los Angeles, California featured MJF defeating Hangman Adam Page in a Texas Death match to retain the AEW World Championship. This match was notable for MJF wearing Terry Funk inspired gear in tribute to the late wrestling legend and WWE Hall of Famer.
WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley recently gave his thoughts on Instagram about his praise of MJF for his tribute to Funk at AEW’s Revolution 2026 event.
“MJF HONORS THE FUNKER
Major props to @the_mjf for honoring Terry Funk last weekend at @aew Revolution 2026… True legends never die!
If I had one more match in me, it would have been with MJF. Sadly, it just wasn’t meant to be…”
Mercedes Martinez Comments on Her Feeling She Was Not “Utilized To Her Full Potential” in AEW
A recent episode of The A2theK Wrestling Show podcast featured former AEW talent Mercedes Martinez as the guest. One of the topics discussed included Martinez’s thoughts about when she realized she wanted to stop wrestling on a full-time schedule and her belief that she was not utilized to her full potential in AEW.
“I think it happened last year when being contracted especially with AEW and not being utilized to my full potential kind of brought me into that weird headspace of like, ‘Can I still hang with the females? Can I still hang with the top tier? Do I still have a lot to prove? Do I have anything to prove left?’ I am blessed for the opportunity that Tony [Khan] gave me for the last four years. But it felt like the last year and a half, almost two years, I just sat on the shelf not doing anything for the company. It kind of messes with your mind a lot. It kind of just makes you [say] is it really worth it? Does he really want to utilize my talent and my expertise? I know my style is not like a TV style. It’s very raw. It’s very rugged. It’s very old school in the sense of very power and strong style. Maybe the girls don’t want to wrestle somebody like me with that style because it’s very raw. But I also look at Eddie Kingston and be like, ‘Well, if he can do it, I know I can do it.’ You need a female like that. It’s kind of one of those things where I’m just like, ‘Man, I’m hitting that age group. I’m 45. Can I still go with the new generation?’ Maybe that’s their thing. Maybe they didn’t want to put me in creative storylines. I’ve pitched. So, it’s just one of those things where I’m like, maybe if we don’t renew the contract, which I already knew it wasn’t going to happen, I’m going to go out the way I want to go out.”
Martinez also gave her thoughts about how she wants to go out on her own terms for her final year for her in-ring wrestling career.
“I want to make sure that I can spend this last year wrestling anybody and everybody. New generation, old generation, the vets, the works, and show that it doesn’t matter if I was on TV or not. I can still go and still have a lot more to prove, but I’m going to do it with just one last year without any change around my wrists. My way, the way I chose to do it, the same way that I came in. Balls to the wall, baby.”
