As noted before, Monday’s WWE RAW show at Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York featured a singles match of Gunther vs. Seth Rollins being among the new matches announced for this April’s WrestleMania 42 event. WWE’s plans for the Gunther vs. Rollins match were later revealed to not have been due to Bron Breakker’s current injury situation.
Dave Meltzer reported in a special preview edition of this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter that his sources stated WWE officials plans for the Gunther vs. Rollins match was something that had been the plan for several weeks. Meltzer reported that the storyline over the past few weeks with Rollins and Paul Heyman was always planned to build for Gunther getting involved in the end to set up the match for WrestleMania.
In regards to Breakker, Meltzer reported that Breakker has been medically cleared from his hernia injury and surgery but WWE officials made the decision to not rush him into a match against Rollins. WWE officials reportedly still have plans to do a Rollins vs. Breakker match but they want the proper television build time for it.
In regards to Gunther’s inclusion in Rollins’ storyline with The Vision, Meltzer reported that WWE officials made the decision to have Gunther be Rollins’ opponent after Bronson Reed suffered a biceps tear injury. WWE officials also had planned for Logan Paul to be involved in a celebrity match for WrestleMania which took him out as an opponent for Rollins for the event. This reportedly led to WWE officials needing a new opponent for Rollins which is how Gunther was chosen.
In regards to unannounced matches for the card of WrestleMania 42, Meltzer reported that a Six-Man Tag Team match of The Vision (Paul & Austin Theory) & IShowSpeed vs. The Usos (Jimmy & Jey Uso) & LA Knight is currently scheduled to take place at the event. Meltzer reported that if IShowSpeed is not ready in time for the event, WWE could end up just doing a tag team match between The Vision and The Usos with Knight and Speed in the corner of their respective teams.
Meltzer reported that a singles match between IYO SKY and Asuka is also likely but this is something that has not been 100% confirmed for the show.
Meltzer also reported that if both unannounced matches are added, that would give WrestleMania 42 a total of 14 matches with an even split of 7 matches per night.
