Matt Sydal has been absent from AEW since May of 2024 and last competed for Ring of Honor in March of 2024. During his time away from AEW, Sydal had underwent surgery on his right foot in June of 2024 to finally fix an injury issue related to a motorcycle accident 12 years earlier.
In a recent Q&A article, PWInsider’s Mike Johnson reported that his sources stated that the reason for Sydal’s current lengthy abscense from AEW is due to him taking much needed time off for his foot surgery and recovery since it had been impacting his work in the ring and causing him pain.
Johnson reported that AEW officials have held talks regarding Sydal’s return to the ring in the company in the near future.
