Mark Davis on Aussie Open’s Match With FTR At NJPW Royal Quest II Was “Pretty Pivotal” To Their Wrestling Careers Growth, Kyle Fletcher’s Wrestling Career Success Only Being The Start For Him, His Partnership with Jake Doyle, & More

A recent episode of Fightful’s In The Weeds podcast featured AEW National Champion Mark Davis as the guest. One of the topics discussed included Davis’ thoughts about his and Kyle Fletcher’s tag team match as Aussie Open against FTR at NJPW’s Royal Quest II event in 2022 being a pivotal moment to their wrestling careers growth

“I think it was pretty pivotal, to be quite honest with you. I think that Dax and Cash are two of the hardest-hitting sumbitches. They’re very proud. They take a lot of pride. The professional wrestling that they do and present and the way that they are in the ring is phenomenal. I know that’s them that’s FTR, that’s them 24/7, they’re locked in. That’s who they are as human beings. They’re very respectable, commandable, and for us (Aussie Open), it was just kind of this- it just kind of it felt like it funneled towards this, like, moment. We had built our name on the UK scene for such a long time. We were just about to step towards going to New Japan, competing in the World Tag League, and it would have been, you know, an opportunity to step in as champions there, which would have been great for us, but just as like a precursor to stepping into that system, that scene that, you know, into Japan, into New Japan, to face two of the very best in what I would have considered at that point, our home turf. They were kind of like walking in as the outsiders to fight us on our home turf, and I think the crowd, the audience, the atmosphere really did lend itself to that. For me, it just, I mean, people will talk about lightning in a bottle. They’ll talk about when wrestling’s great, it’s the best, and that is one of those moments for me personally, where it did feel like everything coalesced into a moment and what we gave people was, you know, on par with what they expected. So it was.. it was unfortunate that we couldn’t take the W in the match, but as just like a step, like a dipping out time into the pool to be like, okay, this is the next step, the next stage in our careers and where we’re going to work towards next. It was, it was a very cool, very like fulfilling feeling.”

In a separate recent interview with The Casual Conversations with The Classic podcast, Davis also gave his thoughts about Kyle Fletcher’s success in his wrestling career and his belief that Fletcher is “only just getting started.”

“Yeah, and I think he’s only just still getting started, if I’m honest. He has such an undefeatable spirit. He gets so laser focused on what he wants to accomplish, and I think that he can just take it as far as he wants to. He’s honestly like a fantastic person, fantastic wrestler very very very proud and yeah very happy for him.”

Davis also gave his thoughts about working with Jake Doyle and their partnership as a team in the Don Callis Family.

“I think there’s an avenue to take that wherever we want to. Like we can, you know, anything that we want to accomplish together. I think that we’d be able to like, do so. It’s just about timing, isn’t it? Sometimes in this business and things will fall into place in ways that you don’t expect them to at times that you don’t expect them to. So who knows what the future will hold? But obviously Doyle in the Don Callis Family back healthy, looking strong, looking great, took Andrade to his limits, and yeah, I’m looking forward. Hopefully we can get back in there together.”

Davis also gave his thoughts about which AEW talents he would like to step into the ring for a future match against him.

“Oh, dude, I think you could make a pretty long list to be honest. I mean, I’ll say any- absolutely anybody, but there’s… I mean like there’s people like the AEW world champion, Kenny Omega, you know, there’s people like Chris Jericho. There’s, there’s honestly a litany of people who I would love now to step in the ring with, now that I’m finding my footing as a singles wrestler. Now that I’ve, you know, been a champion for a little bit, backing up some defenses, my confidence is at an all time high. I think that the- like the recipe for fantastic wrestling and fantastic opponents is there. There’s so many, there’s so many pieces that you could put into place to make some cool stuff happen. So there’s, yeah, the list is kind of endless to be honest.”
