10 Tampa Bay News’ Good Day Live show featured Paul Wight as the guest. One of the topics discussed included Wight giving his thoughts about tonight’s AEW Dynamite show in Clearwater, Florida and teased him making an appearance for an in-ring segment.
“We have MJF, who is a very popular talent. He was in an Adam Sandler movie. He’s a bad guy. Not many people like him. He’s a little bit mouthy. Taking on Kenny Omega for the AEW World Championship. We’ve got another local. Chris Jericho will be competing. We’ve got (Konosuke) Takeshita versus Kyle Fletcher. So there’s a lot of great AEW talent. So good night of wrestling. Good night of entertainment. And it’s also cost effective. It’s where you get more bang for your buck. So you’re going to be able on TV if you get there. Great live event, and also I’m going to be in the ring doing something. I can’t tell you what, because it’s a big secret. But if you come, you will see me maybe slap some people around.”
Wight also gave his thoughts about his lengthy wrestling career and his legacy in wrestling.
“Yeah, I’ve been around a long time. When God said, ‘let there be light,’ I hit the switch. (You have 23 championships and seven world titles.) Is that what I have? Somebody smarter than me is doing the math. It’s funny, I’ve never been a… guy that looks, oh, this, that, this championship. I’m a what’s today, what’s tomorrow guy. I think that’s why even at my age now, still competing, still having fun, still making an impact in the locker room and helping the younger talent, helping the company. That’s where my fun’s at. I think if I sat back and realized all the stuff I’ve done, I might get a case of the lazies.”
In a separate recent interview with Joey Franchize, Wight gave his thoughts about what was the biggest reason for his decision to sign with AEW in 2021.
“I started with AEW and Tony Khan, the biggest thing was I could compete. That was the biggest hang-up for me. I wanted to still compete. There’s a lot of guys that are great trainers and great guys. Billy Gunn, amazing trainer. QT Marshall, amazing trainer. Despite QT’s character on TV, the guy is a great trainer and can work his butt off. understands what to get done. There’s great producers backstage. You got Daniel Bryan’s around there. Bryan Danielson’s around there a lot. So there’s a lot of, Adam (Copeland) and Christian, there’s a lot of great minds back there. That’s not my gig. My thing where I can help out is being in the ring with guys. Because you understand, when I worked and did my best work, was working five days a week for 25 years, working with all the young talents that were coming through from Kofi and Woods and Big E. All those guys, Rusev and Cesaro, all those guys I was on the road with them five nights a week. We were working and I was in there with them mixing it up, and we were learning about timing and presentation, and a lot of that stuff is where I can help the younger talent. Because while we’re in the heat of the moment, I’ll notice, ‘hey, did you feel that? Did you hear that? This is why we did this.; When you’re on the outside of the back, like young guys listen constantly in the back and they’re nice, but they really listen when you’re in the ring because there’s a connection, and I think that’s where I have a lot of value to it. Plus I have some pretty good old stories from the crazy days that pops the younger guys. So, and gals do some of the gals like the stories too. So, you know, that’s, it’s fun for me, man.”
Wight also gave his thoughts about his reasons for his decision to re-sign with AEW earlier this year.
“Let’s thank Tony Khan because Tony Khan still sees something in me. I’m grateful for that. It helps when your boss likes you. He’s one of those bosses that understands what you’ve been through, and your vision. He’s like ‘Yeah, we’re going to make this happen. I want to see this happen, too.’ So you’re like ‘Yeah, that’s good.’ But I’m very grateful, I’m very happy and that’s why I’m here to kick butt.”
Wight also gave his thoughts about Satnam Singh being among the talents who caught his eye in AEW and his belief that Singh is not being used to his highest capacity in AEW.
“Yeah. I mean, there’s a lot. We’ve got a lot of really outstanding young talent there. I mean, they’re doing well now. Like, when I first got introduced to them, they were really just starting to kick it off. But Kyle Fletcher’s doing amazing. Takeshita is an amazing talent. Both of those will be wrestling tomorrow night, too against each other, matter of fact, and they’re two young, I guess you’d refer to them as the studs, whatever you want to call them, thoroughbreds, whatever you want to call them. They’re big. They’re talented. They know their characters. They can get it done in the ring. Talent that’s not really being used yet to their capacity, Satnam Singh, that’s an easy one for me. That’s a direct line. Like when I first started, I had Taker in the corner because I tagged with Taker when I first started in WWF, and I can do the same thing with Satnam. That’s one of the things, because he’s such a good kid and a good guy. But he’s just a massive human being. Satnam’s huge. He’s got to be 7’1″, 2″, you know, 380, 390. You know, I’ve seen him, you know, bench pressing, you know, 500 pounds. Like, he’s a monster. But he just needs somebody to help him on presence.”
