As noted before, this past May’s WWE Backlash 2026 event featured John Cena officially announcing a new event called The John Cena Classic and a new fan voted championship called the Cena Classic Championship. Cena had stated in an interview with Adam’s Apple this past May that his John Cena Classic tournament concept is still a “work in progress.” WWE is currently believed to be planning for this tournament to take place by the end of 2026.
False Finish reported that their sources stated that WWE officials are currently looking at holding the John Cena Classic tournament event on Saturday, December 12.
It was reported that a location for this upcoming event is still yet to be determined.
This potential date would be almost on the one-year anniversary of Cena’s in-ring retirement match against Gunther, which took place at the December 13, 2025 episode of WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event in Washington, D.C.
