UPDATE: There have been rumors going around that claim WWE had plans for Charlotte to defeat Nikki Bella for the WWE Divas Championship early into her main roster debut, however Bella’s boyfriend, John Cena, reportedly had those plans squashed.
Dave Meltzer was asked about the story on the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, however he claimed he did not know if there was any truth to the rumors. He did say that Cena’s relationship with Nikki is part of the reason why she is having such a lengthy title reign. He claims to have heard no discussions about the Charlotte rumor, but added that it doesn’t mean there isn’t any truth to the rumors.
Additionally, it was also mentioned that Cena has spoken up in the past when Bella was set to lose the WWE Divas Championship, however Meltzer noted that he isn’t sure if Cena has done that recently.
ORIGINAL: Per several WWE sources, the original plan for the Divas Revolution in WWE was for Charlotte to win the Divas title from Nikki Bella for her debut. Charlotte, Sasha Banks, and Becky Lynch would then immediately dominate any challengers. However, sources claim that John Cena put a stop to this plan.
Cena reportedly went to Vince McMahon on behalf of his real-life girlfriend, Nikki Bella, and had the plan jettisoned. This resulted in the current booking plans with the Divas revolution that are now on WWE programming.
