Jon Jones tested positive for steroids, it was revealed last month, for his UFC 214 fight against Daniel Cormier.
ESPN reported today that a second test, or “B sample” confirmed the “A sample” and came back positive for the same drug, Turinabol, an anabolic steroid.
Jones will now go through due process measures and have hearings with the US Anti-Doping Agency, UFC’s anti-doping partner. A spokesperson for the USADA had this to say:
“Mr. Jones ‘B’ sample has confirmed the ‘A’ sample findings. Importantly — as previously stated — due process should occur before drawing any conclusions about this matter.”
Jones is facing up to a four year suspension due to previously being suspended in 2016 and harsher punishments for repeat offenses. He and his team have denied knowingly taking any banned substance and have said that they are investigating how it could have happened.
Before the news of the drug test failure, there was a lot of hype around a potential Jon Jones vs. Brock Lesnar UFC fight. Obviously that now seems far less likely.
