Kairi Sane defeated Shayna Baszler on Tuesday to win the Mae Young Classic tournament. According to Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the original plan before the tournament started was to have Kairi Sane defeated Toni Storm. However, WWE then decided to “go all out” with the Four Horsewomen angle and the Sane/Storm match was switched to the semifinals.
WWE originally planned on furthering the Horsewomen angle at the finals, but a decision was made early this week (likely Monday) to hold off on the angle and instead, make the night about Kairi Sane’s win instead of overshadowing her.
Two of the women involved in the angle weren’t at the show anyway. Sasha Banks was in New Zealand, and Marina Shafir also wasn’t there. The rumor is that WWE hopes to have a WWE vs. UFC Horsewomen match at Survivor Series, but we’ll see if that ends up happening.
