As previously reported, WWE is bringing back WCW’s WarGames name and match for next month’s NXT TakeOver in Houston, Texas. The decision to bring back the name is reported to have been a last minute decision, according to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio.
Meltzer reported that the original plans for the event did not involve using the WarGames name nor the match itself. The main event was originally planned to be Drew McIntyre defending his NXT Championship against Adam Cole while SAnitY were planned to defend their NXT Tag Team Championship against Kyle O’Reilly and Bobby Fish. Those plans were later changed to the three team WarGames match featuring Roderick Strong & The Authors of Pain vs. The Undiputed Era (Adam Cole, Kyle O’Reilly, Bobby Fish) vs. SAnitY.
Drew McIntrye will now defend his NXT Championship against Andrade “Cien” Almas. Both matches are expected to be treated as a double main event for the show.
