As mentioned last week, Ring of Honor had been planning to run a show in Madison Square Garden in NYC next year, but by early this week, WWE had caused MSG to cancel the show.
According to Dave Meltzer, the ROH show was planned for April 6, 2019, which is the Saturday before WrestleMania 35. WrestleMania will be held at nearby MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ and there will be an NXT TakeOver that night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Raw and SmackDown are also scheduled for the Barclays Center.
MSG was reportedly seeking out other wrestling companies to run shows there since WWE has typically been going there only a couple of times per year and recently only for WWE house shows, instead choosing to run their TV and PPV shows at the Barclays Center.
According to Meltzer, ROH and MSG had an agreement on the date, but an official contract had not yet been signed.
Immediately after ROH mentioned the show last week, WWE “went to work,” Meltzer says. One source told him that it just took one call from a high ranking WWE official (not Vince McMahon) and MSG pulled the date.
Meltzer says that it “probably” will turn into an “ugly legal fight” and that ROH’s parent company, Sinclair Broadcasting, was “furious” and exploring legal options.
ROH is apparently still planning on running a show that night as they have been contacting other venues in the New York metropolitan area.
