As noted before, New Japan Pro Wrestling held talks with Madison Square Garden last year regarding plans to hold an event at the venue in 2020. The Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer reported last week that it seemed that those talks had fallen apart last month due to MSG’s current views on the U.S. wrestling scene.
Meltzer reported in this week’s Observer Newsletter issue that NJPW officials still have plans to hold an event at MSG later this year, potentially in August. It was reported that MSG officials are also still open to the idea of a non-WWE promotion holding a wrestling event in the venue despite the wishes of WWE.
Meltzer also reported that NJPW officials currently do not have any plans to partner with another promotion for their potential MSG event and instead feel Kazuchika Okada’s drawing power as a top star is enough to generate healthy ticket sales.
In regards to when the event might take place, the Super J-Cast podcast show recently reported that the most common date given to them was August 22nd due to that being the weekend NJPW officials have been pushing for the most.
