WrestleMania 37 in Los Angeles Area Potentially in Doubt

As noted before, WWE announced earlier this year that the city of Los Angeles will be the host of next year’s WrestleMania 37 event, which is currently scheduled to take place on March 28th at the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.

The status of WrestleMania 37 might be in doubt following a recent internal email sent by the Los Angeles Fire Department, the Los Angeles Times reported. This email stated that the restrictions on large public gatherings in the city could last for at least another year, potentially causing WrestleMania to be canceled or moved for a second year in a row.

The email stated that the decision was based on statements from Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti in a recent conference call. “Large gatherings such as concerts and sporting events may not be approved in the city for at least one year,” Garcetti said. This was later confirmed by Garcetti spokesman Alex Comisar to the L.A Times, stating “the mayor was generally referencing studies of current and historical data and best practices for safely reopening our economy.”

“It’s difficult to imagine us getting together in the thousands any time soon. I think we should be prepared for that this year. I think we all have never wanted science to work so quickly. But until there’s either a vaccine, some sort pharmaceutical intervention or herd immunity, the science is the science,” Garcetti also said on CNN Wednesday.

SoFi Stadium is not in Los Angeles proper, but is in nearby Inglewood, CA, which has another mayor, though it’s likely that a decision about major sports events would be coordinated with the various local and state governments.

California governor Gavin Newsom said essentially the same thing as Garcetti on Tuesday. “The prospect of mass gatherings is negligible at best until we get to herd immunity and we get to a vaccine.”
