This past Saturday’s WWE SummerSlam 2021 event featured the surprise return of Becky Lynch to the company. Following the announcement of Sasha Banks being unable to compete on the show, Lynch challenged and quickly defeated Bianca Belair for the SmackDown Women’s Championship.
PWInsider’s Mike Johnson reported that his sources within the company stated that the reason why Lynch was booked to quickly squash Belair for the SmackDown Women’s title was due to WWE officials currently having major heel plans for her. Johnson reported that Lynch is currently planned to be positioned as the top female heel star on SmackDown going forward and will be initially feuding with Belair.
In a separate report, Johnson reported that WWE officials knew well in advance that Lynch would be at SummerSlam and kept her hidden all day to prevent her appearance and return to the ring from being leaked beforehand. Johnson also reported that prior to last week, WWE officials originally had plans for Lynch to make her big return to the company in October instead.
