Wednesday’s Lucha Libre AAA Noche de Campeones 2022 event in Acapulco, Mexico featured an AAA World Tag Team Championship match between Dragon Lee & Dralsitico and champions FTR, which was won by Lee & Dralsitico.
Following the match, Lee announced that he had recently signed an official contract with WWE and would be leaving AAA. Lee also vacated his newly won AAA World Tag Team Championship shortly afterwards.
In an interview with ESPN, Lee stated that he had been in talks with WWE over the past several months for a potential contract and had signed the deal in early December. Lee also stated that his current goal is to become the next Rey Mysterio type star for WWE. Lee also stated that the current plan is for him to report to WWE’s Performance Center this January and start in the company’s NXT developmental brand.
WWE Chief Content Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque commented on Twitter about Lee’s recent signing stating “An unbelievable athlete who has collected accolades and held championships across the globe… and he’s just getting started. The next chapter of @dragonlee95’s career begins with @WWENXT.”
TheCubsFan reported that Lee had given advance notice to AAA officials of his decision to leave the company and his recent signing with WWE well in advance of Wednesday’s event. It was also reported that while WWE had been aware of Lee for some time, his sources stated that WWE only started to make a real move to potentially sign him until after his appearance on the August 17th AEW Dynamite show. It was also reported that Lee was not under any type of contract with AEW and had worked as a freelancer for his appearance.
