As noted before, Mercedes Mone suffered an ankle injury at New Japan pro Wrestling’s Resurgence 2023 event earlier this month in Long Beach, California.
Fightful Select reported that their sources stated that Mone was the person who had called the audible for Willow Nightingale to defeat her to become the inaugural NJPW Strong Women’s Champion. It was reported that Mone had changed the planned finish to the match once she realized she was too injured and would not be able to continue.
It was also reported that their sources confirmed a report from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that NJPW officials had created their new NJPW Strong Women’s Championship specifically in mind for Mone.
NJPW officials reportedly are under the current belief that Mone had suffered a severe ankle sprain but not broken bones while those close to Mone currently believe that she might have also suffered a broken ankle. The exact severity of Mone’s injury reportedly is currently not expected to be known until after the swelling in her ankle has gone down.
It was reported that Mone was in a ton of pain after her match and was helped through the back by Tamina and others.
