AEW Collision Notes: Powerhouse Hobbs, Ricky Starks, & Samoa Joe Advances in Men’s Owen Hart Cup

Saturday’s AEW Collision show in Hamilton, Canada, which was taped this past Thursday, featured three Men’s Owen Hart Foundation Cup Tournament First Round matches.

The first Men’s Owen Hart Cup First Round match featured Powerhouse Hobbs defeating Dustin Rhodes. The finish to this match involved Rhodes hitting a rough looking Code Red for a near fall. This led to QT Marshall trying to interfere only to get laid out by an uppercut by Rhodes. Hobbs then used the distraction to hit a pair of splashes and a spinebuster for the near fall. Rhodes then whipped Hobbs into the ropes and gave him a snap powerslam for a near fall and then tried to apply a Figure Four Leglock only for Hobbs to kick out of it sending Rhodes into a ref distracted punch by Marshall. Hobbs then hit a spinebuster for the pin fall victory to advance to the Semi-final Round of this year’s Men’s Owen Hart Cup tournament.

The second Men’s Owen Hart Cup First Round match featured Ricky Starks defeating Juice Robinson. The finish to this match involved Starks blocking Robinson’s hurricanrana off the top ropes by holding onto the ropes which led to Robinson dodging Starks’ dive off the tope rope and hitting a spear for a near fall. Robinson tried to hit a The Juice Is Loose to Starks only for Starks to escape and hit a spear of his own. Starks then tried to hit a Roshambo only for Robinson to escape but left himself open for Starks to roll him up in a Jackknife Pin for the pinfall victory to advance to the Semi-final Round of this year’s Men’s Owen Hart Cup tournament.

The third and final Men’s Owen Hart Cup First Round match on the show featured Samoa Joe defeating Roderick Strong. The finish to this match involved Strong hitting a dropkick off the middle ropes to Joe for a near fall shortly followed by an Olympic Slam for another near fall. Strong then hit Joe with a leaping knee strike and tried to do a suplex only for Joe to counter and apply the Coquina Clutch to make Strong pass out for the ref stoppage victory to advance to the Semi-final Round of this year’s Men’s Owen Hart Cup tournament.

Samoa Joe will be facing off against CM Punk and Powerhouse Hobbs will be facing off against Ricky Starks for the Semifinals Round of this year’s Men’s Owen Hart Cup tournament.
