WWE reportedly is currently planning for a special guest referee match to be added to the card of SummerSlam 2024, according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter and WrestleVotes.
Dave Meltzer reported in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter that his sources stated that WWE officials are currently planning for a special guest referee to be added to one of the matches for the card of next month’s SummerSlam 2024 event.
Meltzer reported that those spoken to stated that this would not be for the WWE Women’s World Championship match between Rhea Ripley and Liv Morgan. Meltzer speculated that this would likely be for the currently yet to be made official match of Drew McIntyre vs. CM Punk and Seth Rollins being the special guest referee.
WrestleVotes reported that their sources confirmed that WWE officials are currently planning for Rollins to be the special guest referee for the planned McIntyre vs. Punk match at the event.
It was reported that WWE Creative is currently working under the assumption that Punk will be medically cleared to compete with a clearance date currently expected to by the July 29th WWE RAW show.
In regards to Punk’s current status, Meltzer reported that the current McIntyre suspension angle on RAW is just purely a storyline and not meant to be a cover reason for the delay in the official announcement of the McIntyre vs. Punk match. Meltzer reported that while the current expectation is that Punk will be cleared in time for SummerSlam, those spoken to stated that suspension storyline could be used as a backup plan if this were to not happen.
