Buddy Matthews Provides Ankle Injury Update & AEW In-Ring Return Timetable

As noted before, Buddy Matthews has been out of action for AEW since their Grand Slam Australia show this past February due to an ankle injury.

A recent episode of the Insight with Chris Van Vliet podcast featured Matthews as the guest. One of the topics discussed included Matthews’ thoughts about his ankle injury and being lucky his injury was not much worse.

“It’s ok. Rolled it pretty bad. Had an X-ray, MRI. There was no break, but there was like partial ligament tear and cartilage damage. Yeah, [I’m] walking. I haven’t ran. I haven’t jumped. I’ve just started implementing cardio, but then it kind of stiffens up. And, you know, we’re working through it, but the docs were telling me I’ve never seen an ankle roll that much under someone without completely destroying, like smashing, disintegrating the bones. So I didn’t break a bone, which was incredible, but then I had to wrestle 15 minutes after it.”

Matthews also gave his thoughts about how he knew immediately something was wrong when he landed rough on his ankle but is still happy with how his match against Kazuchika Okada turned out given how limited he was.

Matthews also provided an update on his injury recovery stating that he currently feels around 85% healed and him being hopeful to be able to make an in-ring return within the next couple of weeks.

“I’m hoping sooner rather than later. I’m obviously going to have to get in the ring and suss it out and get back in ring shape. But I’m hoping in the next couple of weeks. I’m hoping, fingers crossed.”

Matthews also gave his thoughts about his Hounds of Hell group in AEW and how he wants the group to not just be the House of Black with a new name.

“We just need to get some continuous weeks ahead and really show that the group’s together. I’d love to do some intergender tag stuff with Julia [Hart]. Me and Brody [King] and Julia vs. two men and a female would be awesome.”

Matthews also gave his thoughts about Kenny Omega being one opponent he wants to face for a match in the future.

“I think what everyone wants is me and Kenny. That’s on a lot of people’s bucket lists. Will it happen? I don’t know. Am I down for it? Absolutely.”
