AEW News & Notes
This past Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite show in Kent, Washington featured a promo segment involving MJF and Mark Briscoe. Fightful Select reported that their sources stated that MJF had been pushing to have a storyline feud with Briscoe for “quite some time” and this being something that is considered important for him.
Fightful Select also reported that their sources stated that the reason why Ian Riccaboni has been working as part of the commentary team for Dynamite shows lately was due to the double tapings that have been taking place lately. AEW officials reportedly made the decision to have Tony Schiavone doing interviews in order to lighten his commentary work schedule a bit.
Fightful Select’s Sean Ross Sapp reported in a recent Q&A article that his sources stated that AEW has become “very more picky” when it comes to signing talent released from WWE. Sapp reported that one reason for this new change in signings mentality is due to how several former WWE talents come into AEW only to not be happy with the AEW creative process and leave the company to eventually return back to WWE. Sapp reported that there will still be some former WWE talent who will end up in AEW but it is not going to be a “huge amount” compared to before.
AEW announced that they have recently partnered with Walmart for the release of an exclusive collection of AEW branded t-shirts.
The Echo Park Speedway recently announced that Swerve Strickland will be the honorary pace car driver at the Quaker State 400 race at their racetrack this Saturday in Atlanta, Georgia.
AEW recently released a new AEW Timelines video focusing on the “Timeless” Toni Storm vs. Mercedes Mone rivalry.
AEW also recently released two new videos to their official YouTube channel. The first new video was an AEW World Championship 60-Minute Iron Man match of Bryan Danielson vs. MJF from AEW Revolution 2023. The second new video was a Lights Out match of Britt Baker vs. Thunder Rosa from the March 17, 2021 AEW Dynamite St. Patrick’s Day Slam 2021 episode.
As noted before, AEW and wrestling announcer legend Jim Ross was diagnosed with colon cancer and underwent successful surgery this past May. In a recent episode of the Grilling JR podcast, co-host Ross provided an update stating that his cancer is gone and he is currently feeling “pretty dam good.” Ross stated “Just get back to work. I’m tired of sitting at home. I’m excited about the opportunities that await. I am feeling better. My plan is to be in Dallas for the big event. You always want to be near or attached to the big events that the company you’re working for is promoting. I’m excited about the opportunity to get back in the saddle and kick some ass at some of these events. I’m feeling better. You never know about tomorrow. The cancer is gone, which I’m very happy to say. I’m blessed that my health has returned and I’m feeling pretty damn good.” (Transcript h/t: Fightful.com)
In a recent interview with MuscleManMalcolm, Deonna Purrazzo gave her thoughts about her recent transition from AEW to ROH. Purrazzo stated “I mean, I think that they just announced this Ring of Honor Pure Women’s Championship Title tournament and I think that there was always an idea maybe for me to be in that. It was just a matter of when that was going to happen so, there was some conversations had about, like, we’re just waiting for this and the belt and things like that. But, I feel like, I’m just at the point of my career where I just want to wrestle. Win, lose, draw, tell a good story, not. I just want to be utilized and wrestling and if there’s anything that comes out of that, even better but, I think the key with any kind of TV company, televised product right now is just consistency. There’s so much wrestling every single week, and Monday Night Raw happens on Monday and then Tuesday, we’re rolling over to SmackDown and then Wednesday — so it’s really hard to keep interest if you’re not featured 24/7 basically and so, for me, I just wanna keep consistent. I wanna keep consistent with the AEW audience, I want them to get to know The Virtuosa because I feel like even though I’m a year and a half in, they still don’t necessarily (know) all that I’m about, and whether that’s on Dynamite or Collision or Ring of Honor, I’m just trying to take all those opportunities and capitalize on them. Yeah (I’m still part of the ROH Pure Women’s Title tournament). As far as I know, as of Saturday (she laughed). I know that there was scheduling conflict and things like that but I think they’re trying to actively work on when this tournament will happen and when we’ll film it and things like that so, as far as I know, I’m still in the running to become the inaugural Women’s Pure Champion.” Purrazzo also gave her thoughts about her disconnect with the AEW TV audience. Purrazzo stated “I think, for me, it started when I came in. I think I had such a phenomenal debut and it was in New Jersey and my family was there and I’m from New Jersey so we got that easy — not necessarily cheap pop because I’m from there but, you know what I mean? It was a built-in, knew we were gonna have a great reaction, and so I think after that is when it got difficult because we didn’t explain to the AEW audience right away what the word ‘Virtuosa’ meant and I think that’s something I’ve struggled with my entire career and so I had a lot of different ideas from day one of how do we introduce this character to a brand-new audience? Because TNA, while now is exploding in popularity, at the time was still really niche and not every household in America has AXS TV and I didn’t want to neglect that fact that the casual AEW fan might not know who I am and what I’ve done and what I’m about, and unfortunately, there just wasn’t time for it and we never got to explaining what it meant to be The Virtuosa and so that’s a large part why back last summer, this time, when I was feuding with Thunder Rosa and we were working towards our Texas Bullrope match, I went and I had a series of three vignettes made on my own and I produced them and I had a videographer edit them and stuff and I gave them to AEW and I said, ‘I still don’t think we’ve explained to the audience why they don’t like me’ and there’s only so much interaction and so much of this (flicking them off) I can do to get them to boo me. But they need to understand from a character standpoint what I’m about and so, I kind of took that upon myself to do. But then that was almost a year ago and we’ve not had consistent follow-up yet so, I think, for me, it’s just that consistency that I’ve not had and a reason to really hate me.” (Transcript h/t: Fightful.com)
During the same interview, Deonna Purrazzo also gave her thoughts about how she feels that she deserves to be a part of AEW’s All In: Texas event. Purrazzo stated “I would love to (be part of the women’s Casino Gauntlet at AEW All In Texas). Like I said, I just wanna be involved, regardless of what the stipulation is, regardless of what the venue is or the pay-per-view or the TV is. I mean, I was not a part of All In last year and that was really upsetting to me. I want to be a part of All In this year. I think that I deserve to be a part of All In this year and if we’re going to kick off the biggest show of AEW’s calendar year but then also kind of the start of our new cycle, being in the mix of that is huge and so if I want to become a factor in this division in the next cycle, then I need to be a part of this match… It’s for a World Championship opportunity and if I wanna wrestle Mercedes Moné or if I want to have a rematch with Toni Storm which I’ve never had yet, I need to be in that match and then I need to win that match so it’s huge implications for the rest of what our new calendar year will look like.” (Transcript h/t: Fightful.com)
