A recent episode of the Refocused Radio podcast featured wrestling legend, WWE Hall of Famer, and AEW coach Kevin Von Erich as the guest. One of the topics discussed included his thoughts about the effect of fame coming out of The Iron Claw film and his belief that his sons Ross and Marshall feel like they owe it to their late uncles and himself that the Von Erich Family doesn’t have a curse in wrestling.
“I love my dad, you know, and when I first started wrestling, I called myself Von Erich, because I didn’t know my brothers would do it. But when you think of legacy now, it’s kind of taken on a different meaning with this movie coming out. And they didn’t ask me a thing about it. And this Von Erich to live under the curse and me changing my name and all that, it’s a bunch of bull. That’s not the truth at all. And I think my brothers, my sons, feel like they owe it to their uncles and they owe it to my grandfather and to me. That we have no curse. We’re not cursed. We’re blessed. And I know that’s how they feel about it. But, you know, movies are strong things, you know, and kind of talk to more people than I could ever talk to.”
Von Erich also gave his thoughts about how there is no drugs in today’s wrestling business compared to his days as a wrestler.
“The day I did it, we were pretty shady characters, not my brothers and me, to tell the truth, we worked hard you know, it was all about getting better every day. But there are no drugs in the wrestling business today. The wrestlers are hard workers. They’re guys that are right out of college or the NFL, and they don’t want to waste any time. They want to do their very best so it’s a new world today, and the wrestling is showing it, too, because some of the athletes that we have are remarkable. It’s a great day, and I wish my brothers could see this.”
Von Erich also gave his thoughts about how him and his late brothers wanted to change wrestling and his belief that AEW is reaching that goal they had.
“Me too. Because my brothers and I wanted wrestling to come to a point. We kind of wanted to change it, and I’m telling you, AEW today is reaching that. It’s there. I’m telling you, the athletes, I’ve watched the Hangman. Their champions the Hangman. There’s other athletes that are really good. I mean, they don’t waste motion. They don’t hesitate on anything. To hesitate is to lose. I mean, in wrestling, you react quickly. That’s the whole thing. My sons are going to be there. It’s going to be a great night.”
