In a recent interview with the No-Contest Wrestling podcast, TNA World Champion Mike Santana gave his thoughts about the vibe within TNA’s locker room as WWE NXT talent kept winning TNA title belts. Santana stated “They definitely weren’t jokes. Everybody was straightforward and pissed off. Especially the original core guys like me, Eddie Edwards, Moose, Kazarian. We were like, ‘Yo, we have to change this.’ You don’t like to listen to what other people are saying, but that kind of gets to you. I feel like the best thing that came out of it was it motivated everybody. The fire that was lit backstage was, ‘We ain’t popping off like this. This is not happening.’ We all banded together and were like, ‘We have to do something about it.’ That’s when everything started to kick off and we started making more moves. I remember when I first went to NXT, I made it very known, in Trick’s face, ‘We ain’t living like this.’ I’m glad I was the one to do it. It just motivated the hell out of everybody. I think it did some good.” (Transcript h/t: Fightful.com)
During the same interview, Mike Santana gave his thoughts about wanting to wrestle AJ Styles in a singles match before Styles retires in 2026. Santana stated “I’ve been very blessed in my career to have worked with so many different people, especially people I grew up watching and idolized. There is only one dream match that I’m chasing. There is one left for me, and it’s AJ Styles. There is no one like him. When he’s gone, there isn’t going to be anyone like him. He hasn’t been in TNA since 2015-16. He’s still recognized to this day after the amazing things he’s done since leaving, the fact that he’s still synonymous with TNA and still considered the face and original homegrown talent speaks volumes. I’m in this position as the face and a homegrown talent. The story is there and writes itself. To be able to get in there with him, learn from him, and say I went toe-to-toe with one of the best in wrestling ever…if I could do it for the TNA Title, in a TNA ring, that’s it right there.” (Transcript h/t: Fightful.com)
