CMLL Reportedly Expected Santos Ecobar To Join Before He Re-Signed with WWE & Expected to Resume Talks After His WWE Release

As noted before, Santos Escobar was released from WWE this past Friday as part of a larger batch of talent releases and departures. Escobar has been out of action since this past March’s Lucha Libre AAA’s Rey de Reyes 2026 event due to a torn triceps injury.

Fightful Select reported that their sources familiar with Santos’ situation stated that CMLL had expected Santos to join their company before he had re-signed with WWE last year after being given a “great offer” to retain him.

It was reported that the money Santos was receiving for his new deal with WWE was reasonably too much to bench him despite that did end up happening eventually for him.

Those spoken to reportedly stated that they currently expect CMLL’s conversations with Santos to resume following his release from WWE.

We saw an increase of about 500 people compared to last year. Since we had set a goal of 10,000, I’m filled with regret that we didn’t quite reach it. However, I believe we can hold our heads high knowing that we surpassed last year’s numbers and are moving forward one step at a time.
