Backstage Update on John Cena’s Contract with WWE and Claim Within WWE of Him Not Allowed To Wrestle Anywhere Else Post-Retirement, Current Plans for John Cena Classic

John Cena has been retired from his in-ring wrestling career since this past December’s WWE Saturday Main Event Show in Washington, D.C. Cena has made several appearances for WWE since his in-ring retirement including this past May’s WWE Backlash 2026 event where he officially announced a new tournament called The John Cena Classic and a new fan voted championship called the Cena Classic Championship.

Fightful Select reported that their sources stated that Cena currently remains under a multi-year deal with WWE in an ambassador type role following his in-ring wrestling career retirement.

It was reported that those within WWE claimed that Cena would not be allowed to wrestle elsewhere contractually while as a WWE ambassador.

In regards to WWE’s current plans for the John Cena Classic, it was reported that those spoken to stated that WWE officials are currently targeting for this upcoming new tournament to take place this December. It was reported that the timing for the start of this new tournament currently remains subject to change.
