International Olympic Committee Jacques Rogge has commented today about the criticism over the IOC voting to remove wrestling from the 2020 Olympics. Rogge spoke at a press conference, saying that wrestling will still be part of the 2016 games and that he is looking into ways to re-instate the sport for 2020.
“The vote of yesterday is not an elimination of wrestling from the Olympic games,” Rogge said. “I want to be very clear on that…We agreed we would meet at the first opportunity to have discussions. I should say [international wrestling federation ] FILA reacted well to this disheartening news for them. They vowed to adapt the sport and vowed to fight to be eventually included in the 2020 slot.”
The IOC executive board will meet in May for the next vote regarding the 2020 games; a final vote will be made in September.
