The Rock’s new film Pain & Gain grossed $750,000 in late night showings Thursday night/Friday morning. That number is considered to be quite good for the film, which played in 1,700 locations in the preview showings. The film expands to 2,950 theaters as of today and throughout the weekend; it was expected to make in the $20 million range based on initial industry predictions before last night.
Deadline reports that owners of smaller and mid-sized theaters were particularly surprised by the strong preview grosses as they weren’t expecting a huge hit out of the film, which will open overseas starting in August.
