A CLASS ACT

The wrestling world lost a great Champion, a true gentleman, and a class act, with the passing of Nick Bockwinkel. I feel fortunate that I was able to call Nick Bockwinkel a friend. Despite the thirty years that separated us, and our polar opposite wrestling Styles, Nick and I got along very well. Back in 2010, I was honored to be elected into the Cauliflower Alley Hall of Fame – an organization that Nick was a big part of. I was surprised to be elected, since I wasn’t sure that my wrestling style sat well with some of the more senior members of the voting board. But I was told that it was almost unanimous – that it had been 39 votes out of 40. When I got up to the podium to make my speech, I asked who that one vote could’ve been from. Then, pretending to be upset, I looked out at Nick, shaking my finger. “It was you Bockwinkel! It was you!””, I yelled. Everyone had a good laugh, Nick was grinning from ear-to-ear, and I was given a fun moment with a wrestling legend – a memory that I will hold onto for a lifetime. I never really knew who that one vote came from anyway.
