AEW: More on Barbed Wire Deathmatch for Fyter Fest 2022, Billy Gunn Contract, New AEW Dark Tapings

More on Barbed Wire Deathmatch for Week 2 of AEW Fyter Fest 2022

AEW recently announced that the card for their upcoming AEW Dynamite Fyter Fest 2022 Week 2 special will feature a Barbed Wire Deathmatch between Eddie Kingston and Chris Jericho. This match was announced to also feature all members of the Jericho Appreciation Society being locked in a shark cage that will be suspended above the ring.

Dave Meltzer reported in a recent episode of the Wrestling Observer Radio that his sources stated that Warner Bros Discovery officials had asked AEW to do a shark-based gimmick match for this year’s Fyter Fest special to tie in with this year’s Shark Week festivities, which starts on July 24th.

Meltzer reported:

“The shark thing I guess is the gimmick having to do with Shark Week. Discovery asked them to do a tie-in so they came up with a match to do a tie-in in.”

Billy Gunn Comments on AEW Contract Status & Possibility of Brian “Road Dogg” James Joining AEW

K&S WrestleFest held a recent virtual fan signing event with Billy Gunn as the guest. One of the topics discussed included his thoughts on the possibility of his former tag team partner and WWE writer Brian “Road Dogg” James joining AEW in the future.

“No, not reform New Age Outlaws [in AEW] because if you’ve seen Brian [‘Road Dogg’ James] lately, he’s not — doesn’t wanna wrestle anymore. I don’t know. We’re trying to get him there. He’s got other things going; his podcast that I have to hear about every single day.”

Gunn also revealed that he is currently under a double contract with AEW with one for talent and the other for coaching duties.

“So, I wear a couple different hats [in AEW]. No, so yes, it started out, I was head coach. I started head coach. I had limited — if they wanted to use me, they could. Then my kids joined because Austin was in ROH when I first went to AEW. That fell through or he wasn’t clicking so he came, asked if he could have a tryout, whatever. They hired him and then all of a sudden, I started wrestling a bunch and then they just switched it so now I have an employment contract and a talent contract. Two.

They have to do two contracts because you can’t loop ‘em all together. You can’t loop an employee and talent because you know, it’s self-employed kind of deal. So, in reality, yeah, you’d like to just have one contract that says you do different things but they — you just for some reason, you can’t do it that way. For business, bookkeeping or whatever.”
