More on Kenny Omega’s Deal with NJPW for Wrestle Kingdom 17 Match

As noted before, Kenny Omega is currently scheduled to face off against Will Ospreay for the IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship at New Japan Pro Wrestling’s Wrestle Kingdom 17 event next year.

Fightful Select reported that their sources stated that NJPW officials had been working on plans for this potential match as far back as this past summer with Rocky Romero playing a vital role in helping getting it cleared with AEW. Those same sources reportedly also stated that Romero has been a very important person in NJPW with their global expansion plans and working relationships with several promotions.

It was also reported that while talks between NJPW and AEW for this potential match have spanned over the past several months, the actual plans were only finalized in the past two or three weeks. It was reported that Omega’s suspension in AEW following his involvement in the backstage fight incident at AEW’s All Out 2022 event is currently believed to have slowed the process leading up to the match’s official announcement.

AEW Full Gear 2022 News & Notes

The Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer reported that his sources provided some backstage details regarding AEW’s Full Gear 2022 event this past Saturday in Newark, New Jersey.

In regards to the AEW World Championship match between MJF and Jon Moxley, AEW CEO Tony Khan reportedly was the person who came up with the idea for William Regal’s heel turn and brass knuckles finish for the match. Meltzer reported that based on AEW’s post-show media scrum, MJF and Regal likely will be working as a heel champion pairing similar to Kenny Omega and Don Callis when Omega was AEW World Champion.

Another potential finish idea reportedly had been considered for the match that was pitched by several of AEW’s top talents. Meltzer reported that details regarding this idea are currently not known but it likely would have not involved MJF not winning the title. Khan reportedly favored his finish more when it came to putting together the ending for the match.

In regards to Jim Ross, Meltzer reported that AEW officials made the decision before the show for Ross to help call the first half and Tony Schiavone to help call the second half.

In regards to The Elite’s usage of “Carry On Wayward Son” by rock band Kansas, Meltzer reported that this will be the Elite’s entrance theme for their Trios matches going forward. The Young Bucks reportedly had wanted to do this idea for a long time and it predated everything related to their recent suspension and return to AEW. The Young Bucks’ father reportedly is a big fan of the band and music style while the Young Bucks themselves used this song for their backyard matches as teenagers.
