More on AEW Dynamite Viewership for December 20th

The December 20th episode of AEW Dynamite saw AEW suffer a large decline in overall viewership and a small decline in key demographic ratings and key demographic rankings. That week’s show was notable for being the Dynamite Holiday Bash 2023 special.

AEW drew 782,000 viewers and a 0.26 key demographic rating on TBS. AEW’s key demographic ranking for that night was 4th place.

Detailed key demographic viewership breakdowns were not available in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

Dave Meltzer reported that the main reason for AEW’s declines that week was due to the weaker than usual general television viewership that night and the large declines from their younger key demographic viewership, older male key demographic viewership, and older female key demographic viewership groups, which were down 16.4%, 4.7%, and 18% compared to last week’s show. This reportedly offset the boost AEW got from the larger than usual lead-in programming Big Bang Theory viewership, which drew 1,193,000 viewers and a 0.25 key demographic rating. Meltzer reported that the Big Bang Theory’s key demographic rating was the closest ever to matching Dynamite’s key demographic rating since Dynamite moved to TBS.

In terms of notable head-to-head competition, the NBA game of Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Philadelphia 76ers drew 404,000 viewers on NBA TV, the College basketball game of Villanova vs. Creighton drew 230,000 viewers on FS1, the College basketball game of Baylor vs. Duke drew 1,184,000 viewers on ESPN, the College basketball game of North Carolina vs. Oklahoma drew 1,289,000 viewers on ESPN, the NHL game of Washington Capitols vs. New York Islanders drew 307,000 viewers on TNT, Survivor drew 4,727,000 viewers on CBS, The Masked Singer drew 3,761,000 viewers on FOX, Real Housewives of Beverly Hills drew 956,000 viewers on BRAVO, Challenge: New Champion drew 359,000 viewers on MTV, Sistas Series drew 994,000 viewers on BET, and Expedition Unknown drew 1,097,000 viewers on Discovery Channel.

In terms of key demographic viewership, AEW had 347,000 viewers. AEW’s Males 18-34 was 101,000 viewers (down 9%), Females 18-34 was 38,000 viewers (down 29.6%), Males 35-49 was 159,000 viewers (down 4.7%), and Females 35-49 was 50,000 viewers (down 18%). Meltzer reported that AEW’s male/female viewership split was 260,000 male viewers and 88,000 female viewers for a split of 74.6% in favor of males.

In terms of yearly comparisons, AEW was down 18.3% in overall viewership and down 12.4% in key demographic viewership. Meltzer reported that AEW’s 18-34 viewership was down 21% compared to the same week last year.


More on AEW Rampage Viewership for December 15th

The December 15th episode of AEW Rampage saw AEW suffer a large decline in overall viewership and key demographic rankings and a small decline in key demographic ratings. That week’s show was notable for being the Rampage Winter Is Coming 2023 special.

AEW drew 308,000 viewers and a 0.08 key demographic rating on TBS. AEW’s key demographic ranking for that night was 30th place.

Dave Meltzer reported in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter that the main reason for AEW’s declines that week was due to going head-to-head against ROH’s Final Battle 2023 event that night and the large declines from their younger key demographic viewership, older male key demographic viewership, and older female key demographic viewership groups, which were down 30.2%, 6.1%, and 67.4% respectively compared to the prior week’s show.

In terms of notable head-to-head competition, the NBA game of New York Knicks vs. Phoenix Sun drew 1,282,000 viewers on ESPN, the College basketball game of Connecticut vs. Gonzaga drew 557,000 viewers on ESPN2, Bering Sea Gold drew 825,000 viewers on Discovery Channel, 90 Day Fiance First Look drew 419,000 viewers on TLC, Love After Lockup drew 387,000 viewers on WETV, House Hunters drew 568,000 viewers on Home and Garden TV, and On Patrol Live drew 720,000 viewers on REELZ Channel.

In terms of key demographic viewership, AEW had 107,000 viewers. AEW’s Males 18-34 had 21,000 viewers (down 30%), Females 18-34 had 9,000 viewers (down 30.8%), Males 35-49 had 62,000 viewers (down 6.1%), and Females 35-49 had 15,000 viewers (down 67.4%). Meltzer reported that the male/female viewership skew was 83,000 male viewer and 24,000 female viewers for a split of 77.6% in favor of males.

In terms of yearly comparisons, AEW was down 33.6% in overall viewership and down 45.7% in key demographic viewership. Meltzer reported that AEW’s 18-34 viewership was down 24.5% compared to the same week last year.

  • 2Q – 304,000 overall viewers and 108,000 key demo viewers (Mark Briscoe, Jay Lethal, & Jeff Jarrett & Pals backstage segment, the Don Callis Family vs. Hunter Grey & Paul Titan tag team match & post-match promo with Don Callis, The Outcasts backstage segment, and the start of the Red Velvet vs. Anna Jay match)
  • 3Q – 281,000 overall viewers and 98,000 key demo viewers (Bulk of the Velvet vs. Jay match, the AEW Devil video segment, and the start of the Top Flight & Action Andretti vs. Penta El Zero Miedo, El Hijo Del Vikingo, & Komander Trios match)
  • 4Q – 284,000 overall viewers and 95,000 key demo viewers (Bulk of the Top Flight & Andretti vs. Penta, Vikingo, & Komander Trios match)

More on AEW Collision Viewership for December 16th

The December 16th episode of AEW Collision saw AEW gain a slight increase in overall viewership and key demographic ratings but suffered a large decline in key demographic rankings. That week’s show was notable for being the Collision Winter Is Coming 2023 special.

AEW drew 457,000 viewers and a 0.15 key demographic rating on TBS. AEW’s key demographic ranking for that night was 24th place.

Dave Meltzer reported in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter that the main reasons for AEW’s mixed results that week was due to very stiff sports competition from the NFL that night and the Top 13 shows were all NFL related. Another reason reportedly was due to the declines from their younger female key demographic viewership and older male key demographic viewership groups, which were down 26.3% and 1.1% respectively compared to the prior week’s show. This reportedly offset the gains from their younger male key demographic viewership and older female key demographic viewership groups, which were up 10.2% and 32% respectively compared to the prior week’s show.

In terms of notable-head-to-head competition, the NFL game of Denver Broncos vs. Detroit Lions drew 9,150,000 viewers on NFL Network, the College football bowl game of California vs. Texas Tech drew 1,021,000 viewers on ESPN2, the College football LA Bowl game of UCLA vs. Boise State drew 2,384,000 viewers on ABC, the College basketball game of Alabama vs. Creighton drew 784,000 viewers on FOX, the UFC 296 Prelims drew 925,000 viewers on ESPN, and On Patrol Live drew 659,000 viewers on REELZ Channel.

In terms of key demographic viewership, AEW had 193,000 viewers. AEW’s Males 18-34 had 54,000 viewers (up 10.2%), Females 18-34 had 14,000 viewers (down 26.3%), Males 35-49 had 91,000 viewers (down 1.1%), and Females 35-49 had 33,000 viewers (up 432%). Meltzer reported that the male/female viewership skew was 145,000 male viewers and 47,000 female viewers for a split of 75.6% in favor of males.
