AEW News & Notes
Saturday’s taped AEW Collision show featured Jeff Jarrett making a surprise return. During the show, Jarrett was seen backstage with Karen Jarrett, Jay Lethal, Sonjay Dutt, & Satnam Singh for an interview with Lexy Nair. Jarrett blamed Dutt for feeling that he was not giving them enough opportunities. Jarrett stated that he still wants to win AEW gold during his last run.wasn’t giving them enough opportunities. This led to Karen and Lethal agreeing with Jarrett and Lethal stating that he’ll be calling the shots from now on for the group. This was Jarrett’s first appearance in AEW since this past January.
Saturday’s taped AEW Collision show also featured Paragon’s Kyle O’Reilly & Roderick Strong coming out to “The End Of Heartache” by Killswitch Engage for their entrance theme for their tag team match against FTR. This was Strong’s entrance theme song in ROH and the indies and his first theme song in AEW.
Bryan Danielson has been absent from AEW since his full-time in-ring retirement match at this past October’s AEW WrestleDream 2024 event. Fightful Select’s Sean Ross Sapp reported in a recent Q&A article that Danielson had told him in December of 2024 that he had felt “terrible” due to his neck-related issues. Sapp reported that several of those spoken to within AEW stated that they currently believe Danielson has not wrestled his last match. Those spoken to reportedly also stated that Danielson still works for the company and is occasionally seen backstage at shows.
Dave Meltzer reported in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter that should Mercedes Mone be booked for AEW’s upcoming Grand Slam Mexico event this June, then she will join the exclusive list of wrestlers who have wrestled at Madison Square Garden, Tokyo Dome, Wembley Stadium, and Arena Mexico in their wrestling careers. Meltzer reported that Mone would become the first woman’s wrestler in wrestling history to achieve this.
Dave Meltzer also reported in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter that CMLL recently dropped their restrictions for Bandido to allow him to work at AEW’s Grand Slam Mexico event on June 18th at their Arena Mexico venue. Meltzer reported that those spoken to stated that things were worked out between AEW and CMLL to allow Bandido to work at the venue. Meltzer reported that RUSH and Dralistico’s status for the show is still doubtful due to CMLL still has restrictions on them due to their past history working for their rival Lucha Libre AAA and RUSH leaving on bad terms the last time he worked for CMLL.
As noted before, AEW coach and producer Sarah Stock was released from the company earlier this month for unknown reasons. Dave Meltzer reported in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter that no new details regarding Stock’s release is currently known based on his sources. Meltzer reported that no exact reason is currently known but those spoken to stated that it was “complicated.”
Matthew Jackson recently reflected on Instagram about his thanks to the fans who have supported him and the Young Bucks throughout his wrestling career. Jackson stated “Nothing but love to the real ones who’ve never stopped supporting us. To the ones who didn’t fall for the phony character assassination clickbait articles. The rumors, the lies. You had our backs the whole time & it didn’t go unnoticed. We still do this for you. I would have probably called it a night a long time ago without your support. Let’s keep going. Let’s come back bigger, better & sharper. What is ‘the feeling’ everyone talks about? It’s you. You’re the recipe. Onward & upward.“
In a recent interview with the Way of the Blade podcast, AEW CEO Tony Khan gave his thoughts about his original plans for The Briscoes to team up with Jay Lethal at AEW All Out 2022. Khan stated “The first time I met them was Supercard 2022. I tried to get them involved in AEW after Supercard. At All Out 2022, when the Motor City Machine Guns wrestled on All Out, that was originally going to be The Briscoes teaming with Jay Lethal against FTR and Wardlow. It would have made a lot of sense, if you looked at what was happening with FTR and Briscoes. It would have been great. Motor City Machine Guns came in and did a great job, but they were new to the story and they kind of came in out of nowhere because we couldn’t use The Briscoes.” (Transcript h/t: Fightful.com)
