Gunther on Retiring John Cena Was “Most Meaningful Win” of His Wrestling Career, His Cena Victory Being Comparable to Brock Lesnar Ending The Undertaker’s WrestleMania Streak, & Not Hanging Around Backstage After Cena Match

A recent episode of TMZ’s Inside The Ring podcast featured Gunther as the guest. One of the topics discussed included Gunther’s thoughts about his victory over John Cena in Cena’s retirement match was the most meaningful win of his wrestling career.

“It was definitely the biggest or the most meaningful win, maybe, of my career or the win with the biggest reaction afterwards. That I can definitely say. It’s hard to compare to anything else because John Cena has been such a legendary figure in WWE [and] the wrestling world in general. It’s really hard to compare. Like the whole day, I could tell people were really tense and very serious about everything. It almost felt like more important than WrestleMania to a lot of people backstage, if I can compare it to that. I mean, I knew what I was going to do anyway. So the clock was ticking. It almost felt like a time bomb to explode at the end of the day. And, yeah, well, it did. Thankfully to my advantage.”

Gunther also gave a message in character to those still upset over his victory over Cena.

“Stop crying. Life goes on.”

In response to comments from the host about his victory over Cena being comparable to when Brock Lesnar defeated The Undertaker to end Undertaker’s WrestleMania streak, Gunther responded stating:

“Um, yeah, I think maybe you can make it because I think back about that, it was a similar situation. It was like a real outrage about it, and it was the right thing, yeah, back then because Brock (Lesnar), he’s still in the company, and he was the mountain to climb for 10 years now… I don’t know how long ago that he ended the streak but, yeah, it is a similar situation that also comes with a bit of pressure because at the end of the day, what I achieved that night is a gift and now it’s on me to protect that gift and yeah, keep it up and that’s the challenge for me now and judge me after — how I did.”

Gunther also gave his thoughts about how he did not hang around backstage after his match with Cena on the show.

“To be honest, I kind of disappeared, so I didn’t really speak to many people, because, yeah, just sometimes when the damage is done, you leave and you don’t take a bath in it anymore. I took that bath in it on Monday, and yeah, I haven’t really been around after the match.

As soon as it was done, they had the whole stuff going on in the ring outside. I just disappeared to my room and kind of stayed out of the commotion and left…”
