As noted before, WWE officials had originally pitched for a Hell in a Cell match to take place at this April’s WrestleMania 42. This potential match would have involved Drew McIntyre and Cody Rhodes competing for the Undisputed WWE Championship prior to WWE officials opting to go in a different direction instead for their plans for the title match at WrestleMania.
Dave Meltzer reported in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter that his sources stated that WWE officials have pretty much locked in their plans for the Undisputed WWE Championship match at WrestleMania 42 to be a singles match between Randy Orton and Rhodes.
Meltzer reported that this ends recent weeks of speculation of this title match potentially being a multi-man match.
In regards to WWE’s original pitch for a Hell in a Cell match, Meltzer reported that those spoken to within WWE stated that there was never a serious thought or plan but a Hell in a Cell stipulation was heavily discussed for a Rhodes vs. Roman Reigns match for the title before plans were changed. Those spoken to reportedly also stated that WWE officials made the decision to change everything for their plans for the Undisputed WWE title match at WrestleMania 42 after Seth Rollins’ torn rotator cuff injury and the decision to put the title on McIntyre this past January.
