Tony Schiavone on He ‘Always Checks On’ Darby Allin Following Big Spots in His Matches, His Belief Kyle Fletcher Can Become Biggest Star in AEW, Biggest Differences Between AEW & WCW For Him, & Him Rejecting Pitch for Tank Abbott to Punch Him in Midsection in WCW

A recent episode of the 3NT Wrestling podcast featured AEW commentator Tony Schiavone as the guest. One of the topics discussed included Schiavone’s thoughts about Darby Allin performing risky big spots during his matches and how he always checks on Allin afterwards.

“So afterwards, you know, I always check on Darby. Always check on him because of the crazy things he does, and afterwards, and they’re picking glass out of him and, you know… I’m looking (at him), I say, ‘well, I guess next time we just have to take out a gun and shoot you, because we’ve done everything else we can do to you.’ We’ve set you on fire. We’ve thrown you down steps. You’ve thrown yourself off of a ladder on the glass. You’ve climbed Mount Everest. What else can be done? He’s just an amazing, amazing guy, and he keeps bouncing back.”

Schiavone also gave his thoughts about his praise of Kyle Fletcher and his belief that he can eventually become the biggest star in AEW by far in the future.

“There’s another guy who when I first saw him, I knew he’d be a big star, and you know, I’ve talked for a moment here about being able to do promos, okay? To me, the guy that was kind of the underdog, he came in as a tag team wrestler, we didn’t think much of him, but I knew he was a big star, is Kyle Fletcher. Kyle Fletcher has, he came in as Aussie Open with Mark Davis, just a tag team that had wrestled in Japan. He’s from Australia, and now he’s developed into this big single star under the Don Callis family, and I think he’s the underdog that eventually can be the biggest star in AEW by far.”

Schiavone also gave his thoughts about about the biggest differences between working with WCW and AEW during his wrestling broadcast career.

“Well, what feels similar is that it’s an alternative to the WWE. What feels different about the two as far as I’m concerned is that, and I brought this up on an interview earlier, is that at WCW, the wrestlers were my age. At AEW, they’re the age of my kids. That’s the biggest difference. So there’s a different dynamic that I have now with these guys and girls. It is more guys than I’ve ever experienced as far as, I don’t know, we’ve got to promote a lot of stuff. We’ve got to promote venues, T-shirts. I’ve got notes that I’ve never had before on each wrestler. It’s just more involved of a TV show than I’ve ever been involved with in my life. So that’s a different dynamic.”

In a separate recent interview with WTVR CBS 6, Schiavone gave his thoughts about if he had ever been beaten up while announcing in pro wrestling and him rejecting a creative pitch to be punched by Tank Abbott during his time in WCW.

“No, I’ve never been really beaten up. There was one time that one of our writers, this was years ago, this was back in (WCW), I guess maybe years ago, and he said, ‘I’d like this wrestler to punch you in the midsection,’ and the wrestler at that time was a wrestler named Tank Abbott, who also had been a UFC fighter, and he was known to be pretty stiff. I said, ‘absolutely not, anybody else, but I don’t want him to hit me.’”
