Kyle Fletcher on Wanting To Go Down As Greatest Ever Pro Wrestler, Treating Everything He Does In His Wrestling Career As Biggest Thing In The World, Him Wanting To “Be The Guy That Leads” AEW “Into The Next 10, 20 Years”, & Pressure To Represent AEW Being “Super Validating”

Big Gold Belt Media held a recent interview with AEW International Champion Kyle Fletcher. One of the topics discussed included Fletcher’s thoughts about his main goal for his wrestling career being him wanting to go down as the greatest ever professional wrestler to ever do it.

“I want to go down as the greatest professional wrestler to ever do it. The greatest professional wrestler to ever be in a pro wrestling ring. I want people- wrestling is very subjective, so I know that it’s never going to be like a hundred percent everyone unanimously agrees that Kyle Fletcher is the greatest pro wrestler ever. But, I think for me, setting that as my big overarching goal in my career and in my life, it’s gonna strive me to keep pushing because it’s something that I can never fully achieve, if that makes sense. It’s a goal that, it’s like, it’s so subjective that it’s like, I’ll never hit a certain point, I’ll never have a certain match, and then people will go ‘alright it’s done, he can stop now, he’s the greatest wrestler of all time.’ Like, that’s not how it works. It’ll be something that, like, when my career is long over, hopefully people look back and they go, ‘dang, that Kyle Fletcher he might be the greatest to ever do it,’ and I think that’s why I like setting that as my goal because it gives me something to keep chasing forever, and it gives me something to keep it. It forces me to keep improving because that goal is never going to be achieved. So yeah, to answer it, that’s what I want my legacy to be, bro. I want to at least be in the conversation, you know, that’s my goal.”

Fletcher also gave his thoughts about how he strives to treat everything single thing he does in his wrestling career as being the biggest deal in the world.

“One of the things that I have always strived for throughout my career is treating every single thing that I do like it’s the biggest deal in the world. Doesn’t matter if I’m wrestling for a tag title or if I’m wrestling in front of 20 people or whatever, like every step along the way, I treated it like it meant the world to me because it did. This is literally my dream. I’m living my dream, and it’s like, the bigger the opportunities get and the bigger the platform, the bigger that pressure gets. But, I think that pressure is necessary to succeed and to keep pushing and keep growing because the pressure gets bigger and more people are relying on me and more people are depending on me to go and do an awesome job. It then pushes me to, okay, I have to- every single day, I have to be working to get better so that I can handle that pressure, that I can handle that load, so that I can be the guy that leads this company into the next 10, 20 years and makes it into something that lasts a lifetime, right? That’s what I want, and that pressure is necessary for me to keep pushing to get better every day, I think.”

In a separate recent interview with The Culture Collective, Fletcher also gave his thoughts about him wanting to be “the guy” who leads AEW for the next decade or two.

“Every step along the way, I treated it like it meant the world to me because it did. This is literally my dream. I’m living my dream. And it’s like the bigger the opportunities get and the bigger the platform, the bigger that pressure gets. But I think that pressure is necessary to succeed and to keep pushing and keep growing because the pressure gets bigger, and more people are relying on me and more people are depending on me to go and do an awesome job.

It pushes me to, every single day, work to get better so that I can handle that pressure, that I can handle that load, so that I can be the guy that leads this company into the next 10, 20 years and makes it into something that lasts a lifetime.”

Fletcher also gave his thoughts about his goal on becoming the future face of AEW and the pressure to represent AEW being “super validating” for him.

“I think that’s probably what every pro wrestler strives for. You get so good to the point that somebody can rely on you to go out and do the absolute best job possible and represent the company in all these different aspects and whatever else. I think it is a huge mark of, ‘We trust you.’ For me that’s the biggest thing.

It’s not one person deciding this. It’s like 20 different people, ‘What do you think about this? What do you think about this?’ And all of them saying, ‘Yes, he’s the guy. Yes, he’s the guy. Let’s do this.’ It’s all these ticks of approval from people that I grew up idolizing. They’re looking at me and going, ‘Yes, he’s the future of AEW. He’s our f*cking guy.’

It’s super validating. It’s validating 15 years of my life that I’ve dedicated to this. It wasn’t all for nothing. It was all for a purpose, and it was all to get me here.

The pressure is absolutely real. One of the things that I have always strived for throughout my career is treating every single thing that I do like it’s the biggest deal in the world. It doesn’t matter if I’m wrestling for a tag title, if I’m wrestling in front of 20 people or whatever.”
