UPDATE 2: By a ten to two vote, the New Jersey Sports & Entertainment Board voted in favor of closing down the IZOD Center by the end of the month. That means that SummerSlam will definitely have to find a new home.
UPDATE: he State of New Jersey wants to close the IZOD Center because it’s losing too much money. The decision will be voted on later today. It would close for at least two years and all existing contracts for events (through March) would be transferred to the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
If someone wants to acquire and privately operate the venue, they would have to wait until 2016. That’s when the American Dream Mall will open in New Jersey, right next to the IZOD Center. The venue opened in 1981 and has been home to wrestling during its entire lifespan.
ORIGINAL: As reported yesterday, WWE’s scheduled home for this year’s SummerSlam (The IZOD Center in New Jersey) is likely to close by March. If the venue does close, WWE reportedly wants to keep the event in the New York/New Jersey area. At this time, Madison Square Garden, The Prudential Center, The Barclays Center and even the Red Bull Stadium are being looked at as options.
