Abyss appeared on the Ross Report and talked with Jim Ross about nearly jumping to WWE in 2006. Abyss said that he was offered a contract from John Laurinaitis with a promise of a main event push right away. The talks began courtesy of Tommy Dreamer, who was working under Laurinaitis at the time and coordinated the conversation as Abyss’ TNA contract was coming up. The play was to have him debut at the 2007 Royal Rumble and begin a feud with The Undertaker that would have culminated at WrestleMania 23.
Abyss said that he decided not to sign with WWE at the last minute, which Dreamer attributed to “stage fright” but he disagrees. He said it was difficult to leave TNA, which he helped build from the ground up, and said that 2005 – 2006 was one of the hottest times for the company. He added, “I would rather have been part of something… versus taking the chance of going somewhere and just being a number.”
Abyss noted that he has some friends in WWE and is very appreciative for the offer, saying, “I’m sure it’s an amazing place to work.”
