The Wrestling Observer reports that while Sasha Banks beat Charlotte on RAW last week to win the WWE Women’s Championship, that always wasn’t the plan. WWE originally wanted to have Sasha win at WrestleMania, making her the first champion in the title’s new run.
Plans changed when Becky Lynch started getting over with the fans, which led to the triple threat at Wrestlemania. The plans were changed from Banks beating Charlotte to the champion retaining to give Banks’ win the most impact. It was decided to hold off until Summerslam while Charlotte worked against Natalya and Lynch for the next three PPVs.
Since the draft split up the rosters and WWE wanted to increase ratings for the USA Network, the decision was made to have the title change on the first post-draft episode of RAW, with the rematch at Summerslam instead.
