Lucha Underground is currently dealing with serious issues in regards to its future, according to this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
Last week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter reported Lucha Underground’s management managed to find a source of funding for a potential fourth season after their main financial backers for season two and three backed out. It was also reported that an on-going internal dispute between El Rey and MGM over costs for the series has become a serious problem with MGM wanting cuts and even considering shutting down Lucha Underground. The result at the moment is that a potential fourth season would be very limited in terms of budget and possibly in episodes.
Dave Meltzer reported that Lucha Underground’s owners are currently in the process of trying to find a new network who can cover the costs needed to continue the show in its current state. The owners feel the show needs to move to a new network in order to secure its future and grow the audience. The potential move would not remove El Rey Network’s current share of ownership in the company though.
The biggest issue at the moment is the show costs roughly $400,000 per episode and management is split between those who want to shut it down due to high costs and those who want it to continue even if it means being in a more limited state. Those who want the show continue believe they just need more time in order to grow the company to levels they were expecting since the end of season one.
