New Japan Pro Wrestling held a press conference earlier today discussing several topics and upcoming plans for the company. One of those topics was the official announcement of a new championship belt debuting next month for the company.
This title will be called the KOPW Championship and will make its official debut at NJPW’s Summer Struggle event on August 29th in Tokyo, Japan.
The company announced that an eight-man tournament will be held starting on August 26th to crown the inaugural champion. The first round will be held as a standard single elimination round with the winners to advance to a Fatal Four-way match on August 29th. The winner of this Fatal Four-way will then be crowned as champion.
Following the crowning of the inaugural champion, it was announced that match stipulations for title defenses will be determined by fan voting.
It was also announced that this championship will not be a physical belt and instead will be a annual series with the holder of the title at the end of the year receiving a trophy as a reward. The entire process for the championship will then restart in 2021.
